Types of Sushi — A Complete Guide

The world of sushi is surprisingly diverse, and each type has its own unique character. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned sushi lover — here's everything you need to know about sushi types.

Maki Rolls

Maki is the most well-known type of sushi. It's rice and filling wrapped in nori (seaweed) and cut into pieces.

  • Futomaki — thick rolls with multiple fillings, typically 5-6 ingredients
  • Uramaki — inside-out rolls, rice on the outside, nori inside
  • California Roll — classic uramaki with crab, avocado, and cucumber

Hosomaki

Hosomaki are thin rolls with a single filling. They're smaller and lighter than regular maki — a perfect choice for something simple and elegant.

Nigiri

Nigiri is a hand-formed rice ball topped with a slice of fish or seafood. The purest form of sushi — simple yet requiring great skill.

  • Salmon nigiri — the most popular choice
  • Tuna nigiri — bold, rich flavor
  • Shrimp nigiri — sweet and juicy
  • Eel nigiri — grilled with sweet sauce

Sashimi

Sashimi isn't technically sushi since it doesn't include rice. It's thinly sliced raw fish — the purest way to appreciate fish quality.

Our sashimi selection includes salmon, tuna, and more.

Tempura Rolls

Tempura in sushi means a crispy battered ingredient — usually shrimp or vegetables. Tempura rolls are richer in flavor with a crunchy texture.

Gunkan

Gunkan ("battleship") is an oval rice ball wrapped in a strip of nori and filled on top — usually with roe, seafood salad, or chuka wakame.
